Eastside Middle School After School Chess Program Spring 2010

Location: Eastside Middle School - 1458 York Ave (between 77th and 78th street), New York, NY 10075

Kids of all ages will have fun while learning in Our After-School Chess Program.

Students will learn life enhancing skills: Concentration, Strategic Thinking, Visualization, Problem Solving, Emotional Intelligence, Etiquette.

* At the beginning of the semester, each student's skill level will be assessed by the NYChessKids staff.

Class Description

Beginner's Class - All Grades

This course is specifically designed for students who want to start out studying chess. Students study the basic elements of chess: the chess board, the various chess pieces, how they move and how they capture opponent pieces. They learn the special moves like castling, pawn promotion and en passant. Special attention is paid to the fundamental concepts of check, checkmate and stalemate and their continuous practice. After this course students will be able to play a decent game of chess.

A lesson normally consists of a lecturing part using a multimedia projector and a practical part where students play chess and practice. Students will also get homework assignments such as handouts for individual training.

During the lesson there will be a snack break.

The maximum number of students for this course is 16.

Intermediate Class - All Grades

This course is intended for students that already know all the rules of chess and understand basic concepts such as check, checkmate and stalemate. In this course students are introduced to elementary chess tactics such as fork and pin as well as elementary endgames such as king and pawn versus king. Students learn how to checkmate the lonely king with two rooks, a queen or a single rook. They also learn how to attack and checkmate the opponent's king by studying common checkmating patterns. This course also explains to the student how to properly play the first moves of a chess game. Students learn the basic principles of development in the opening by studying many examplary short games. The course continues with the study of more elementary chess tactics with all kinds of discovered attacks, discovered checks and double checks. Students learn how to checkmate the lonely king with two bishops and they also learn more about basic endgame strategies such as the opposition. Students also study more checkmating patterns and they are introduced to important classical chess games.

A lesson normally consists of a lecturing part using a multimedia projector and a practical part where students play chess and practice. Students will also get homework assignments such as handouts for individual training.

The maximum number of students for this course is 16.

Tournament Training Class - All Grades

This class is for students with a 1000+ rating who play in chess tournaments on a regular basis and who want to join the ESMS chess team to represent ESMS at national chess events.

A lesson normally consists of a lecturing part using a multimedia projector and a practical part where the kids play chess and practice. Kids will also get homework assignments such as handouts for individual training.

During the lesson there will be a snack break.

The maximum number of students for this course is 20.
