Testing & Promotion
A promotion gives everybody - student, teacher and parents - the opportunity to verify the fact that a specific part of the student's chess education has been completed successfully and that the student is ready to move on to the next level.
The main purpose of promotion is to encourage our students to study the relevant chess material of their current level in a serious way in order to raise their overall knowledge and understanding of the game of chess. Promotion is a specific test of what they have learnt that will confirm that they are ready to advance to the next level in order to study new material. Promotion should also be viewed as an acknowledgment for the student's commitment to serious work.
In order to be eligible for promotion a student must participate in one of NYChessKids chess program activities such as After School Chess, Chess Camp, Online School or Private Lesson.
Normally a teacher with which the student has been studying will recommend the student for promotion.
A student can be promoted together with other students in a group promotion (levels 1-5) or the promotion can be individually (levels 6-10).
Promotion tests will be held on a monthly basis within the NYChessKids program.
A promotion test normally takes about half an hour to one hour depending on the level. It consists of several tests, one of them being a theoretical test which is either on the computer or oral and another one being a test at the chess board.
In many cases the promotion will be recorded and made available online for the student and his parents to watch.
Once the student has successfully passed the promotion test he will receive a certificate that he completed his chess education of his current level and that he is now ready to advance to the next level. He will also get a T-Shirt that has his new level printed.
Testing costs and duration depend on the level of the student.
1 -> 2 group $ 15, 1/2 hour
2 -> 3 group $ 15, 1/2 hour
3 -> 4 group $ 20, 1 hour
4 -> 5 group $ 20, 1 hour
5 -> 6 individual $ 25, 1.5 hours
6 -> 7 individual $ 25, 1.5 hours
7 -> 8 individual $ 30, 2 hours
8 -> 9 individual $ 50, 3 hours
9 -> 10 individual $ 50, 3 hours
