NYChessKids Skill Levels

NYChessKids teaches chess to students from all over New York City and from various schools. In its chess classes NYChessKids strives to provide all students with the same educational chess program so that students can benefit from studying a proven set of chess topics based on their individual skill level.

NYChessKids offers a comprehensive and concise chess program for chess students that is comprised of ten different skill levels. Each level offers a specific set of chess knowledge that each student has to study. When a student has mastered his studies for that level he can then advance to the next level.

There are a total of ten different levels, starting from level 1 all the way to level 10, with each level having a chess related name.

Level Name

1 Pawn
2 Knight
3 Bishop
4 Rook
5 Queen
6 King
7 O-O Short Castle
8 O-O-O Long Castle
9 Pawn Promotion
10 En Passant

Level 1, the "Pawn" level is the introductary level and assumes no chess knowledge at all. In this level the student will start to learn chess from the very beginning. The student will learn everything about the rules of chess - the chess board, how the chess pieces move, special moves, check, checkmate, stalemate, the value of the pieces and much more.

For each level NYChessKids privodes a concise description about the study material, which includes includes various tactics, mating patterns, classical chess games, endgame knowledge, famous players' games and biographies, opening study, chess strategy, how to use chess software, and much more.

NYChessKids skill levels are in no way related to a student's rating or tournament performance. They simply reflect a specific set of chess skills and knowledge an individual student has acquired so far.

When a new student starts to study with NYChessKids through one of the chess programs - After School Program, Chess Camp, Online School or Private Lessons - one of the very first things we do at NYChessKids is to evaluate the student's chess skills and compare it to the NYChessKids skill levels, which will eventually result in the student being assigned to the level that best matches his skills.

Once a student has studied all the necessary material of his level he can be tested in order to get promoted and proceed to the next level. Normally a student will be recommended for promotion by his chess teacher, who knows exactly how much chess knowledge the student has gained during his studies.

In order to advance to the next level the student has to go through a promotion testing procedure.
