Level 1 - the "Pawn" level is the first level and assumes no chessm knowledge at all. In this level the student will learn everything about the rules of chess - chess board, how chess pieces move, special moves, and much more.
Part of a level's study material can include various tactics, game references, endgame knowledge, famous players' games and biographies, opening study, chess strategy, how to use chess software, and much more.
NYChessKids skill levels are in no way related to or reflect a student's rating or tournament performance. They simply reflect a specific set of chess skills and knowledge an individual student has acquired so far.
In order to advance to the next level the student has to go through a promotion process.
Promotion
A promotion gives everybody - student, teacher and parents - the opportunity to verify the fact that a specific part of the student's chess education has been completed successfully.
The main purpose of a promotion is to certify that a student has learnt all the material of his current level and that the student is ready to advance to the next level to learn new material.
In order to be eligible for promotion a student must participate in one of NYChessKids chess program activities like After School Chess, Chess Camp, or Private Lesson.
Normally a teacher will recommend a student for promotion.
A student can be promoted together with other students in a group promotion or the promotion can be individually.
A promotion normally takes about 1/2 to 1 hour and consists of several tests. One of them is a theoretical test which is either written or oral and another one is a test using the chess board.
In many cases the promotion will be recorded and made available online for the student and his parents to watch.
