Let me tell you about one of the most exhilarating moments our fabulous chess team has ever experienced. It all happened at the Supernationals II: Battle of the Minds---the largest scholastic chess tournament (with 7,000 participants) ever sponsored by the US Chess Federation, in Kansas City, Missouri. Our children prepared for months, relentlessly sparring with one another and with their teachers, and analyzing the games in special classes. Then, for three solid days, (April 27 - 29th) our chess team played their hearts out and won top honors as they trampled some of the best, most talented competitors in the nation. A highpoint of the tournament was when RJ Parrino, a first grader, played on board one in the under 800 K-3 section at the front of the huge 5 acre playing room, with the leaders of each section, his game on a demo board for the audience of parents and coaches, wearing his KC wild west cowboy outfit, boots, ten gallon hat, and vest. Collecting the slew of trophies our fearn won at the closing ceremonies was the ultimate thrill, but at the heart of the tournament was how each individual player benefited from this extraordinary event. Here's a recap: Passion: Building a love for the

Proper Etiquette: Playing by the
rules of the game while showing respect for opponents The Supernationals II tournament proved how powerful chess is as a learning tool for PS 116 students. Congratulations to Bonnie Waitzkin, who runs the chess program in our school and of course to our dedicated and inspirational coach, Saudin Robovic and all the team members who attended. Go 116 Chess!
