Who We Are

NYChessKids was organized by International Master Saudin Robovic to improve communication between educators, parents, and kids involved in scholastic chess. With interested in scholastic chess growing more every day around the country, NYChessKids is
a resource for courses, camps, tournaments, media, and fun.

 What We Do
NYChessKids is an organization made up of the City's finest scholastic chess instructors, school coordinators, parents, and young players. Everyone involved with NYChessKids is encouraged to share their ideas on how to improve New York scholastic chess. School can start their own curriculum or after-school programs with the help of NYChessKids. Parents can publish articles on the web about their experiences and meet and talk with other chess parents easily through NYChessKids. Kids can introduce themselves and publish their games on the internet, as well as poetry and stories.
 Why Chess

Chess is one of the best games for school children who are ready for a new, fun challenge! Studies show that kids who play chess as a school activity score higher on standardized tests than kids who don't play chess. Better grades in math and reading could very likely come along with your child's next game! Exercising a child's skills for spatial geometry, visual memory, problem solving, logic, calculation, andsportsmanship in just one game often produces astounding results!

From Chess in Education Research Summary by Robert Ferguson, " Why should we teach chess? What are the hard facts about chess and academic achievement? Chess has been proven to enhance creativity, concentration, critical thinking skills, memory, academic achievement, problem solving, cultural enrichment, intellectual maturity, self-esteem, standardized test scores, and a core of other qualities that every administrator, school board director, parent, and teacher desires."

 Our Mission
To organize a community of students, parents, and instructors committed to the benefits and growth of scholastic chess in New York City. We hope to set the standard for the limitless possibilities with chess and children. NYChessKids is a resource and network for teachers in the city, parents of the players, and kids of the game.
Students are encouraged to post their games on our website to each others. Parents can post events and contact other parents through our website. Our mission is to listen carefully to your dreams, and offer a program that will help you as a player or parent to realize your goals in scholastic chess.
 2006-2007 NYChessKids Policies

NYChessKids is a Limited Liability Company
based in New York City. NYChessKids employs experienced and gifted chess teachers dedicated to developing young chess players' abilities to both play and enjoy "The Royal Game" in schools around New York City. NYChessKids also organizes chess tournaments and chess camps to further that aim.

REGISTRATION POLICY

For NYChessKids Tournaments: We encourage parents/coaches to register their students early in order to assist us with planning the event. You may register by mail, by web (see above), or on-site. The cost of registration increases as the tournament nears. Please read the tournament flyers for details.

For NYChessKids Camps and Workshops: We encourage parents/coaches to register their students early in order to assist us with planning the event. Please note that the camp is filled first-come, first-served. Please view our flyers for details. You may register by mail, by web, or on-site.

For NYChessKids Classes: In order for students to be at exactly the right level for the class they are registering for, we encourage parents to register students at the beginning of the chess semester/trimester if possible. It is possible to join classes in progress, however. The best way to register is by leaving the flyer with payment with the school. You may also register by mail or by web.

REFUND POLICY

For NYChessKids Tournaments: For students withdrawing from the tournament after they have already registered and before the tournament starts, the cost of the entry will be refunded minus a 20% processing fee. There are no refunds once the tournament begins, whether the student forfeits without notice, or if they decide to withdraw during the event.

For NYChessKids Camps and Workshops: Refunds would only apply if students have registered for more than one day of chess camp/workshop. In that case, unattended days can be credited to future camp or workshop days, or refunded completely minus a 20% processing fee.

For NYChessKids Classes: If a student withdraws before the first week of class, a 100% refund will be issued. If a student withdraws before the midpoint of the semester/trimester (before the 4th week of an 8-week class, before the 5th week of a 10 week class, or before the 6th week of a 12-week class), they will receive a prorated refund minus a 20% processing fee. There are no refunds once the midpoint of the class is reached, as described above. Missed classes can be credited to future classes in case of illness—please contact us.

TEACHING POLICY

NYChessKids hires experienced chess teachers who enjoy working with children, and not necessarily the strongest chess players, though many master-level chess players are part of the staff. Teachers are trained during the summer and hired at the beginning of the school year. All teachers must follow the NYChessKids program based on 10 Levels of Chess Education. The programs are designed by NYChessKids Staff, based on ten years of teaching in New York City Schools, and parents are welcome to obtain materials to see exactly what their children are studying. OUR GOAL IS THAT THE STUDENTS ACTUALLY LEARN HOW TO PLAY BETTER CHESS! Of course we do our best to foster a fun and supportive atmosphere, as we strongly believe in an American philosophy of teaching: friendly interaction with students and teachers. We want to establish an American Chess School! (Many books have been written about the so-called Russian, English, and Chinese Chess Schools). For example, we allow our students to play video games during breaks at chess camp. In addition to lessons specially prepared by the teachers, we utilize highly-regarded computer training and work with multimedia projectors. We feel that chess is not just another activity for entertainment, while also maintaining that chess study does not have to be torturous drudgery.

BEHAVIOR POLICY

We hope that students enjoy their time studying chess with us and have fun, but we also expect students to maintain reasonable standards of discipline, and to respect their teachers as their teachers respect them. In the case of serious discipline problems, teachers first talk to the student, and if the problems continue, the student’s parent would be contacted. In ten years of teaching, we have not experienced very serious disciplinary problems, but this is how such situations would be handled.

DRESS CODE POLICY

In most of our classes students are casually dressed; in some classes we give students t-shirts. In those cases, we would appreciate it if students would wear these t-shirts. At very special events, we may require dress attire. For example, when we organized exhibitions with former World Champion Garry Kasparov, we required students to dress formally (shirt, tie and slacks for boys; dress pants/skirt and blouse, or dresses for girls).

INSURANCE POLICY

For the past ten years it is very fortunate that NYChessKids classes and events have not resulted in any serious injuries, etc., but NYChessKids is covered by general liability insurance for all of its events.
