P.S.116 Tournament - June 3, 2007

(See 145 pictures below)

This was the last NYChessKids tournament of the 2006-2007 school year, and 126 students attended the event, quite a good total for an event held after the National Scholastics have ended.

This event also saw some changes in the rounds and time controls used: the Championship section, formerly 4 rounds at Game/45, was today played with 3 rounds at Game/75. The format of the Open section was changed from 4 rounds, Game/45 to 3 rounds, Game/60. Finally, the Primary section and Reserve section, previously 4 rounds at Game/30 were changed to 4 rounds at Game/45. These changes were apparently due to popular demand, as students ostensibly want longer games as better training.

The results are summarized below. To see the ratings report of the four rated sections (Championship, Open, Reserve, and Primary), visit the USCF Member Services Area: http://www.uschess.org/msa/XtblMain.php?200706030131.

The Championship section drew 12 players, and with Andrew Ng of Marlboro and Miles Hinson of Collegiate tying for first with 2.5 points out of 3. They drew their encounter in Round 3 to set up an Armageddon playoff to choose for the top prize. No team prizes are awarded in the Championship section.

Lenn Uchima of PS 158 won the Open section with 3/3. The team prize was captured by Uchima’s PS 158, as they beat out PS 116 on tiebreaks despite having only two players!

Ranked in the middle of the field coming into the event, Leo Vigna of Lycee Francais was a surprise winner of the Reserve section with a perfect 4-0 score. The reward? He gained 130 rating points to reach 1100 on the nose! PS 116 ran away with the team prize in this section.

PS 116 first grader Akhilesh Khakhar-Shah won the Primary section with a perfect 4-0 score. Akhi led his school to first place in the team championship by a point over Browning.

Alex Newman of Howell Road School and Lisako Ishikawa of Marymount each scored 4-0 in the Novice 2 section. In its debut, Our Lady of Guadalupe School won the team prize by five points! They also contributed 2/3 of the participants in the section, making Novice 2 the second-largest section in the tournament!

PS 41’s Adrian Durkin won the Novice 1 section with a 4-0 score. The team prize was won by PS 116.

The participants of the No Score section are as follows: Alexander Aboutaam, Xavier Bagnatto-Saad, Miles Brewster, Oliver Chin, Zachary Cohen, Emma Contiguglia, Jacob Greene, Isabelle Jaber, Jordana Judd, Daniel Lewis, Aiden McGorry, Alexandra Peeler, Isaac Sacks, Jake Sandler, Ethan Tym, and Derrick Xiong. Thanks for playing!
