The latest NYChessKids tournament hosted by P.S. 116 drew quite a large number of players—150 players actually participated in the event (there were several no-shows who would have raised the number even higher). This total has only been surpassed by the January 15 tournament, which always draws the biggest turnout of the year.

The Championship section was won by Aaron Landesman of Hunter and Zachary Rivkin of Horace Mann, with 3.5 points each. Landesman had slightly better tiebreaks, and finished in first place. Hunter also won the team prize here, as three of its players participated in the 10-player section!

Jack Millman of Horace Mann finished clear first in the Open section, edging out Fei-Tzin Lee of Dalton, Akhil Vasvani of Trevor Day, and Christopher Vazan of St. Bernard’s. 16 students participated. P.S. 116 won the team prize by a half-point over Horace Mann.

Isaac Veytsman of P.S. 199 turned in a perfect 4-0 score to win the 31-player Reserve section by half a point over Warren Wang. P.S. 116 won the team prize over Hunter by a comfortable margin.

In the Primary section, Gardner Crary of St. Bernard’s and Maya Yamazaki-Otake of Nest both finished with 4-0 scores, Crary having better tiebreaks. With four players finishing at 3-1, P.S. 116 won the team prize.

The Novice 2 section had six players register, but only four appear! Granville Kaynor of St. Bernard’s finished with an undefeated 3 out of 4. Although we cannot really speak of teams in this section, someone had to get the beautiful cup prize! P.S. 116 had two of the four participants and they won the prize with a higher score.

Leon Lai of P.S. 130 and Myles Wolf of Parkside finished with perfect 4-0 scores in the Novice 1 section, Lai having better tiebreaks. P.S. 116 won the team prize with 9 points.
