P.S.116 Tournaments - Jan. 15, 2007

On the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, NYChessKids held its biggest tournament yet: 182 players registered for the event held at PS 116 on 33rd Street! There was incredible energy in the building for such a gathering, and all players received prizes for their efforts. Below is a summary of the results, section by section. For the No Score section, we just give the names of the players who participated, but not their results. The prizes awarded for the Championship and Open sections were sponsored by the NYChessKidsShop and by the Internet Chess Club.

The Championship section, making its second appearance in NYChessKids tournaments, drew a small but formidable cast, led by the rating favorite Allen Weiss (2080) of Midwood High School who dominated the opposition on the way to a perfect 4-0 score. For his prize he chose a digital camera—the triumphant winner is going to give this as a present to his sister. Other prizes included a portable TV, iPod Shuffle, portable iPod speakers, a portable DVD player, Fritz 10, a DGT Chess Clock, a 6-month membership to the Internet Chess Club (ICC), and a luxury wooden chess board with beautiful Staunton pieces. Yes, the prizes were clearly intended for educational purposes… Hunter brought three of the players in the section, and thus won the team prize.

The revamped Open section brought 19 players, and it was won by Colin O’Connor of PS 334 with a perfect 4-0 score. He also gained 153 rating points for his efforts! Dalton easily won the team prize with 9.5 points with its team of four.

The Reserve section was claimed by Christopher Vazan(+80) of St. Bernard’s and by Kennan Ewing(+130) of Frank G. Lindsey School, both with 4-0 scores. Vazan had the slightly better tiebreak and won the 1st place trophy. The team prize was claimed by the “elder statesmen” of PS 116 with 10 points.

The Primary section was won by Benjamin Sperling of Nest with a perfect 4-0 score. And he did this en route to a monstrous rating gain of 317 points! His team, however, was edged out by Dalton 10.5-9.0.

Simon Lehrer of Special Music School, playing in his first-ever tournament after participating in afterschool chess classes for years, had a successful tournament debut: he won the Novice 2 section with a 4-0 score! PS 116 won the team prize.

The Novice 1 section had the most participants in the event (40) and there was a three-way tie for first. Each player had perfect 4-0 scores: George Scott of Nest, Jackson Keel-Atkins of Hunter, and Daniel Levy of Ramaz. The team prize was won by PS 116 who brought 19 students to the section (only the top 4 scorers are counted). This must be a record amount of students for any section we have had from one school.

The following students participated in the No Score section: Matthew Beinner, Evan Buonagurio, Emma Contiguglia, Jakob Djibankov, Nicholas Firestone, Julian Fuchsberg, Laura Goldstein, Duncan Hamilton, Tyler Jonas, Lucas Kaplan, Andrew Kass, Jeremy Kogan, Riley Neher, Naava Ofri-Akman, Luchino Oliveros, Kevin Pechersky, Alexandra Peeler, Ethan Perez, Neda Rahamian, Devon Ramirez, Alexandra Reich, Tarrus Richardson, James Samson, William Sassauer, Olivia Sheh, Charlie Silberstein, Andrew Tai, Liza Vigna, Alexa Watson, and Destiny Wright-Butler.

We thank everyone for playing! Please note: the February NYChessKids tournament may be rescheduled. We will keep you updated. The rated sections (Championship, Open, Reserve, and Primary) have been rated and you can view the results at http://www.uschess.org/msa/XtblMain.php?200701159151.
