About the camp:
The NYChessKids summer camp has been held for many years—first at the Manhattan Chess Club and, for the past five years, at our location at the Episcopal Church. Most of our students come from New York City, but we do attract students from other areas and have occasionally had students visit from other countries for a few days! The goal of the camp is to foster an environment of learning and fun, so that students are happy before and after the day. During breaks, students can watch movies, play video games, or play more chess/bughouse. For very motivated students, the breaks are a tremendous opportunity for gaining specialized instruction from a teacher. For all students, there is early drop-off beginning at 9am, at no extra charge!
With the half day option, students work on chess for the duration of their stay here (until 1pm).. For students staying for the full day, the morning will be mostly devoted to chess, while in the afternoon there will be an outdoor exercise portion (weather permitting) followed by a tournament-style game and analysis session with the teachers.
Snacks and pizza lunch will be provided! Students are welcome to bring their own snacks and lunch.
While the format of each camp day is the same, the content and form of the lessons varies day-to-day. There is always a warm-up session and the "tournament-style" session, but the other sessions can take different forms, for example:
-Puzzle solving (various forms of tactics; endgames; studies; etc.)
-Multimedia projector lesson
-Demonstration board lesson
-Analysis
We take into account the needs of the groups when designing lesson plans.
NYChessKids has a large reservior of staff resources, and the instructors change daily. We also sometimes invite guest teachers to instruct groups.
